Photography Homework: Using Light to Define Form & Volume

March 7, 2013 by carol anne Leave a Comment

This week’s assignment focused on pattern and texture and form and volume. I used light to define form and volume in the following photos. The subject of this week’s photos is the mask they used to secure my head during my radiation treatments two years ago. (You can read more about the mask here)

I thought its shape would allow for good lighting and the opportunity to use that light to create a photo with a subject that looked more three dimensional than two dimensional.

Some people will find this set of photos creepy, unsettling and upsetting so if you’re easily upset or you’ve already lived through this with me and don’t want to again STOP READING HERE.

I think all of these photos are better viewed in a larger size, so please click on the photo, which will take you to my Flickr page, click on Actions and choose View all sizes, this will bring you to a larger image.

In this photo I used a glow stick to light the mask and symbolize the radiation. The glow stick is purposely on the left side because that is where the cancer and the radiation were concentrated. In this image the glow stick represents both the cancer and the radiation. It’s green, the color of life. I didn’t start out for the green to represent life (I just found the glow stick in a drawer) but as I sit here examining the photos for this post I realize this is what the green represents in my mind.
