As discouraged and frustrated as I was feeling yesterday I’m as encouraged and energized today. I met my new Oncologist this afternoon. It was a very positive experience. I left feeling much better about the whole process.
I really like Dr. Hughes. She made me feel comfortable.
She took the time to talk to us and she actually examined me. She looked in my ears and my eyes, she felt my neck and my back for lumps and, she examined my mouth for sores or any other problems. She declared all is well so that made me feel good.
Dr. Hughes took the time to tell us about the different types of radiation they might use and how long I’ll likely be on the table each day. She also let me know that if I need medication to get through it it’ll be available. She told us where they’ll direct the radiation and how long my treatments will last and how much radiation they’ll use.
This in just the first appointment. This wasn’t a sim or anything like it. She wants to follow up in a month so she can see me after the skin graft surgery. Then we’ll start talking about another sim appointment and setting a radiation treatment schedule. She said that the cancer I have will allow for waiting for my skin graft to heal.
I feel relieved. I’m very glad I decided to change doctors. I’m feeling more positive and less ill at ease. She didn’t sugar coat anything but she looked me (us) in the eye and helped us to understand everything and make us comfortable.
I keep saying it but it’s true, I’m so fortunate to have such a strong support system. I’m surrounded by an amazing family and friends. The hubs encouraged me to change doctors and I’m so glad I did. He said to me as we were leaving Dr. Hughes’ office today, “You deserve the best care.” My brother and sister-in-law both said to me that it is important to feel comfortable. It’s immensely reassuring to know that people are behind you and that they feel you are making good decisions.
I came home from the appointment to find this on my front doorstep.
It’s from my friend Tara in Australia. The card read, “Sending happy thoughts your way, today and everyday. Congrats on the positive news. We’re right behind you.” It means so much to me that so many people care and take the time to reach out to me. I love you all.
Thanks for reading!
