Pop Culture Potpourri — Bits & Pieces Edition

February 4, 2011 by carol anne Leave a Comment

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of Pop Culture Potpourri. That’s right, this week’s edition. I may have bitten off more than I can chew and overestimated my pop culture consumption when I first declared Pop Culture Potpourri would be a daily occurrence. From here on out it’s a fun Friday feature.

Speaking of fun has anyone seen the newest programming promo spot on WE TV? There is a new show scheduled to begin on June 21, Staten Island Cakes. Yes! You read that right, Staten Island Cakes. I missed out on the Cake Boss craze but I love Amazing Wedding Cakes and Ace of Cakes. I can’t wait for this to premiere. I haven’t seen an episode of Amazing Wedding Cakes in a while. I wonder if we’re due for a new season or if it was cancelled. Hmmm… I’ll have to look into that.

While I’m on the topic of yummy delicious cakes and TV check out Kati Angelini’s of Kati’s Kupcakes in Moorestown, NJ audition video for season 3 of Cupcake Wars. Wish her luck on Twitter @katiskupcakes.

Holy Colored Eyebrows Batman!

http://www.mystyle.com/mystyle/b6127_fearless_fad_checker_colors_her.html
Have you seen this *points to above link* Fearless Fad Checker snippet on the Style Network? Oh my gosh she has blue eyebrows. Somebody please tell me that this is just runway makeup and that there aren’t women running around with colored eyebrows. How would anyone who isn’t blonde work this fad?

Netflix Confused. Film at 11.

I think Netflix may be a little confused about the movies and TV shows they think I’ll like. They suggest that I’ll enjoy Psychic Kids: Season 1 based on the fact that I liked Corina Corina. *scratches head* I love Corina Corina. It’s one of my favorite movies and I don’t recall there being psychic kids or anything remotely paranormal in the movie. I think the folks or programs at Netflix and Twitter need a little work.

Teen Queens do Syfy (Mylie Cyrus this is your first and only warning)

Debbie, I’m sorry Deborah Gibson and Tiffany are starring in a movie entitled Mega Python vs. Gatoroid on the Syfy Network. Pay attention Mylie Cyrus. This is your life in 30 years if you aren’t careful.

Inspire a Song (Contest)

In my former life I was calendar editor for a local parenting magazine. After I left I kept in touch with some of the folks I listed in the calendar. On Wednesday I saw this in my e-mail. So go for it! Send the folks at Two of a Kind your ideas for a song. How cool would that to be to have a song inspired your ideas? Let me know if you enter and/or win.

A Song Idea Contest!! We’re getting ready to record a new CD, and we want to hear YOUR ideas for a new song. We encourage kids and adults to send us their ideas, and we will turn the winning entry into a song that we will record on our new CD.  Ideas can be as little as a word or a title, or as big as a whole detailed story.  Ideas can be funny, serious, silly, poignant or otherwise – whatever you think would make a good song!  The deadline is February 25, 2011.  Send us your ideas by email: 2ofakind@comcast.net

It’s All About the Brides Baby!

It’s Friday afternoon, time to talk Bridal reality TV. I have to say this week’s batch of bridal reality was just meh at best. I think Say Yes to the Dress was a rerun and Four Brides was a really boring special titled something like Blunders. It wasn’t anything we hadn’t seen before and it wasn’t even bitchy or snarky enough to be funny or infuriating. TLC if you stop entertaining me on Friday nights I’m going to be forced to like read a book or something.

I always look forward to Rich Bride, Poor Bride and My Fair Wedding Sunday nights and even these episodes were less than impressive. If I were the couple on Rich Bride, Poor Bride I’d have been heartily disappointed in the job their wedding planner did. I don’t think he managed to bring their vision of a tropical wedding to life at all. A tiki hut bar does not a tropical wedding make. It makes a tacky wedding. I did love Dipika’s beautiful red ceremony dress and gorgeous blue reception dress. They were both to die for. I think they were over budget by something like $14,725. I didn’t write the numbers down this week but if I were over budget by more than $14,000 I’d want my wedding to be lavish and luscious and ripe with tropical flavor and really this was anything but. Very boring. I’m totally disappointed.

I normally adore My Fair Wedding but the past two weeks were just kind of meh. Last week’s show, which I didn’t write about was a Wizard of Oz theme and much as I love David I don’t think he hit this one out of the park. I did however love what he did with the safari themed wedding. Everything was gorgeous. It was the bride I just couldn’t bear. Hey girlie! You’re getting a wedding that most of us couldn’t afford in our wildest dreams.

So that’s it for this week’s round up of Pop Culture Potpourri. Stop back next week for more wedding TV snark, thoughts about 2 Glee episodes (Yay!) and my musings on all things pop culture. Until then be good!

Love,

~ Carol Anne

Pop Culture Potpourri — 1/19/11

January 19, 2011 by carol anne Leave a Comment

Hey! Good afternoon my dear lil readers. I hope today finds you all well and enjoying the reprieve from the bitter cold snowy/icy/slushy weather.

Today is Wednesday, January 19. It’s Edgar Allen Poe’s birthday. Happy birthday Edgar!

I finally got to watch My Fair Wedding. The Alice in Wonderland wedding was everything I hoped for and more. Her black dress was gorgeous. Both of her hats were spectacular; the bridesmaids’ jewelry was fantastic. Oh my gosh! The reception space was incredible. David please throw me a Halloween vows renewal.

Okay, I’m also caught up on Rich Bride, Poor Bride. The hubs loves the last few minutes of this show when they tell how much they spent on the wedding and how much over budget they are. I just can’t wrap my head around spending so much on one day. Where do people get money like that for one day? Who decides they want two wedding rings because two looks better than one? How are these people going to be able to manage their finances and keep roofs over their heads and food on the table? They have to be starting their married lives in massive debt.

Original budget $42,000

Actually spent $69,862

Over budget by 27, 862

That’s 27 months (2 yrs., 3 months) of rent or mortgage @ $1,000 a month.

That’s 23 YEARS of cable TV, Internet, and phone bills if you have Comcast Triple Play.

That’s more than 3 years of groceries at $150 per week.

You could eat 27,862 cheeseburgers from the dollar menu at any fast food joint. That’s 1 cheeseburger a day for 76 years.

You could drink a $5 cup of coffee every day for 15 years.

According to Lotpro.com you could buy any one of the following 20 cars in cash with no car payment. That’s from the under $30,000 group alone. There are some pretty nice cars in this list.

20 Cars under $27,862

1. 2011 Honda Odyssey, 2. 2011 Ford Edge, 3. 2011 Buick LaCrosse, 4. 2011 Subaru Impreza Sedan WRX, 5. 2011 Dodge Charger, 6. 2011 Acura TSX. 7. 2011 Nissan Quest, 8. 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, 9. 2011 Toyota Highlander, 10. 2011 Nissan Pathfinder, 11. 2011 Audi A3, 12. 2011 Chrysler 200, 13. 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 14. 2011 Toyota Venza, 15. 2011 Honda Civic Hybrid, 16. 2011 Volkswagen Routan, 17. 2011 Volvo S40, 18. 2011 Chrysler 300, 19. 2011 Mazda RX-8, 20. 2011 Subaru Impreza Wagon WRX

Speaking of cars, that’s more than 4 years of $500 per month car payments.

$27,862 is 2,786,200 pennies.

Do you get where I’m going with this? What an incredibly ridiculous sum of money $27,862 is to be over budget by.

Their original budget was $42,000. I don’t remember how many people were invited to the wedding, but if you pay $150 a head for 200 guests that’s $30,000 leaving $12,000 for limo, DJ, favors, cake, wedding dress, etc.

Okay that’s it for this edition of Pop Culture Potpourri. Thanks for reading.

Pop Culture Potpourri — 1/18/11

January 18, 2011 by carol anne Leave a Comment

Hey! Good afternoon my dear lil readers. How’s everyone this soggy Tuesday evening? I’m back with day 2 of Pop Culture Potpourri. I promise today’s missive won’t be anywhere near as preachy or sanctimonious as yesterday’s.

Okay all you TV producers out there listen up! The world needs an awards show just like the Golden Globes for political journalists (print, broadcast and Internet). C’mon you know you want to see the White House Press Corps drunk and giving speeches. Millions of people would watch. *laughs* Okay, maybe I’d watch.

Last Wednesday when I was at mom’s she gave me her copies of People Magazine (Valerie Bertinelli on the cover) and Reader’s Digest. I read People this afternoon. There’s a small piece about Johnny Weir in it. He has a new book out, it’s a memoir entitled Welcome to My World. I love how much he loves his family. I think I’ll buy it when it comes out in paperback.

Speaking of memoirs and paperbacks that Justin Bieber kid is on the cover of Vanity Fair, he too has a memoir out. *looks amazed* Isn’t this kid like 16 years old? What has he had like a minute of success and he’s got a memoir? I haven’t read the magazine yet. I’ll let you know what he’s memoiring (I know that’s not a word, but it should be, Merriam call me.) once I read it.

I watched the Golden Globes on Sunday and now I’m so behind in my other TV programs. I had a Jersey evening last night. I watched The Jersey Shore and Jerseylicious last night. What’s up with Snooki? She’s been drunk since she got to house and got herself arrested after a 24-hour bender. Did I miss her being drunk all the time on the other seasons or is this a new development? She seems like a sweet girl in real life. I hope this doesn’t become a regular thing for her. She’ll lose her looks quick if it does.

OMG! How much do I love Jerseylicious? I know. I know it’s scripted. It’s not real. It’s filmed at night. Blah, blah, friggin’ blah. I don’t care. These people entertain me and that’s all that matters to me. Gigi you go girl! The minute you weren’t desperate for his love he lost the upper hand. Good for you girl. You don’t need a man to complete you. I hope things work out and you get to live happily ever after, but good for you for taking back control and asserting yourself. Oh my gosh, I feel so bad for poor little Olivia. I wouldn’t want to have to deal with Doria either. She’s like the flippin’ Snapple lady with a bad attitude.

Hey MTV & Style Network! How cute would Snooki and Olivia be in their own reality show? Set them up in a house in Wildwood and turn the cameras on. I’d love it! South Jersey doesn’t get represented in any of these Jersey reality shows. >insert sad face here<

I still have Rich Bride, Poor Bride and My Fair Wedding to Watch as well as Worst Cooks. I’m dying to watch My Fair Wedding. This week’s bride has an Alice in Wonderland theme. I can’t wait to see the amazing job David Tutera does making this into an elegant and amazing wedding. I love him.

I don’t even know what’s on the DVR from Monday. I’m sure Intervention is on there and I hope I remembered the record Harry’s Law. I really wanted to see it. Part of the reason I missed watching all my Monday shows was I sat down to watch Piers Morgan’s first show on CNN. I don’t know if I’m going to keep watching. I didn’t watch Larry King but I was curious to see what Piers would do with the show. I can’t get over Oprah. I’m not a regular viewer of her program and I only buy her magazine from time to time but I can’t get over how self-important, arrogant, persnickety and rude she came off last night. She was, in a word unimpressive. I’m curious to see how his interview with Howard Stern goes.

Hey! Does anybody know where to buy the Wonder Woman mug Wendy Williams drinks from on her show? It’s blue with a picture of Wonder Woman painted on the side. I love it. Wonder Woman is my favorite superhero.

That’s it for today’s Pop Culture ramblings. Stop back tomorrow when maybe I’ll have finally caught up on Sunday and Monday’s shows.
