Fifteen Photography Goals for 2015

January 13, 2015 by carol anne Leave a Comment
"Long Exposure of Philadelphia Skyline"

I hope to get out at least once a month to take long exposure shots of the beautiful Philly skyline.

Hey! Hello there. I hope your new year is off to a peaceful, happy, and productive start.

I know I’m quite a few days late and several dollars short but I figured I too should throw my hat in the ring of January resolutions/goals blog posts. With the noted exception of the 365 project, I’ve decided that this year I am going work on small projects broken up in to short periods of time rather than attempting to focus one big project for the whole year. I think a bunch of smaller projects will be easier to stick with than one big daunting all-encompassing project.

I have a bunch of things I’d like to learn to do and a bunch of projects I’ve been reading about. Now, I don’t have a lot of equipment and no flash equipment at all so some things will have to be altered to accommodate my lack of gear and I’ll just improvise on others and see where the project takes me.

Project Ideas from Digital Camera World

I am particularly excited about the scavenger hunt idea listed in this Digital Camera World article. Check back in a few weeks when I ask you for your photography scavenger hunt ideas.

"Frozen Flower"

I tried the frozen flower project from the link above with an artificial flower in a bowl, it wasn't perfect but a good first try. I'll make sure to buy a small rectangular plastic box and a few fresh flowers for the next try. I still haven't figured out what to use to weight the flowers down.

And while I’m not sure I’ll, actually I’m positive I won’t do these exercises daily. I do think I will try to focus on the basics and work on making good clear well-executed photos in addition to learning/working on new skills. I think I’ve become a little sloppy as of late.

I’ve set 15 photography goals for 2015 check back daily to see which goals I’m working on and what I’m photographing each day. And don’t forget to stop by at the end of the month to add your ideas to my photographic scavenger hunt.

15 Photography Goals for 2015

1.  Continue to learn how to shoot portraits.

2.  Learn to work with my new reflectors.

3.  In the spring finally have that unfortunately cancelled (due to both a sickness and a death in the family) photo shoot from September.

4.  Continue to improve my landscape photography.

5.  Learn to shoot with my circular polarizer and neutral density filters.

6.  Learn to make water droplet photos.

7.  Work on creating long exposure photos.

8.  Build a white box and play with shooting photos of objects.

9.  Improve my pet photography / take more photos of Cuppy and Snowy.

10.  Work on improving my composition.

11.  Stick with the Capture Your 365 project.

12. Sell some photos / have a paying photo shoot.

13.  Get back to the basics and focus on taking good photos straight out of the camera.

Goth Girl in Good Light

Focusing on good light, good light metering, and a good angle produced this photo, which I'm pretty proud of.

14.  Learn Lightroom and Photoshop. (Yes, I know 13 and 14 are contradictory of one another.)

15.  Expand my creativity as I definitely feel I’ve stagnated in this area.

And for those who are interested, 2014’s largely neglected one object challenge featuring Charlie Brown will ride again in 2015. CB will once again accompany me on any and all adventures and hopefully this year I’ll remember he’s in my bag more often.

Capture your 365: Day 12

Day 12 —Frost/Ice/Frozen/Chill

Early this morning I read this Digital Camera World article and while I didn’t have a fresh flower readily available I did try to freeze an artificial flower for today’s assignment. It’s not perfect and I don’t own the kind of flashes or strobes mentioned in the article, but I do think I managed to create a strong image

Day 11 — White

My adorable and very photogenic Snowball Kitty. Although quite photogenic he’s less than happy about having his picture taken. So much so that this photo was taken with a telephoto lens.

Day 10 — Habit

Me and the hubs are birders and we have made a habit of visiting the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge a few times a month since we first found our way there in June. Our goal for 2014 was to see a Bald Eagle and wild turkeys. We actually did see both in 2014 but neither sighting produced a useable photo (oh boy they sure weren’t). With news of a Snowy Owl sighting and lots of Bald Eagles congregating around the scarce open water we made our way down to Refuge in the hopes of seeing the rare Snowy Owl and perhaps also spotting a Bald Eagle or two. And so today, I finally got my first semi decent shot of a Bald Eagle. Standing out in the bitter cold talking to a fellow birder I finally got a useable shot of a Bald Eagle! As an added bonus we got to see a beautiful winter sunset. It was so worth the cold feet. Note to self: Comfy sneakers are not warm sneakers.
