New Year’s Day 2011 dawned foggy and overcast but warm, which was a nice change from the bitter cold and icy conditions of the previous week. Between the bitter cold and the snow I hadn’t been out for a walk in a few days so we hopped in the car and headed out to the park for an afternoon walk and some picture taking.
In the end we actually visited two parks yesterday. There’s a small park right down the road from our house that has a pretty pond and a cool little bridge to walk over. The pond was frozen over and I wanted to see what kind of photos I could get. When I was out taking these pics I wasn’t sure any would be good enough but once I got home and saw them on the computer I was actually kind of happy with them. I made some of them black and white, which in the end I actually kind of liked but ended up cutting from this post. You can see them over on my Flickr Photostream.
After our brief stop at Veteran’s Park we made our way over to Washington Lake Park for our actual walk. This time we tried another walking trail, which led us to a beautiful pond with swans and ducks floating around in it. It was magical. We were there at sunset on this overcast day. The colors were so soft and ethereal and the silence was breathtaking. It was just us and the ducks and swans. It was amazing just to happen up this beautiful space that we didn’t even know was there. I didn’t get very good photos of the ducks or the swans. Next time we go I’ll bring my telephoto lens. I did however get a few nice shots of the pond.
As accustomed as I am to living in a state that is fairly warm year-round, frozen ponds are still so amazing to me. These shots are really beautiful.
Thanks Tara. The photos on your page are gorgeous.
I love the reflective quality you captured in every shot! Very beautiful.
Thanks Sarah. I was so convinced while I was out taking the pictures on Saturday that none of them were good. I was so happy to find that some came out much better than I expected. Thanks for stopping by. Please come back again.
I love all the reflections, so beautiful.
Happy New Year!
Thanks Mami. It didn’t start out to be a set of reflections, it just sort of ended up that way. Happy New Year to you as well.
Great photos. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you as well Marla. Thanks for the compliment and for stopping by. Please come back again soon.
Frozen lakes are a foreign concept to us here in South Africa but these are beautifully taken!
Thank you Laura. I wish frozen lakes were a foreign concept here too. :-)
Stopping by from Unknown Mami’s Sundays In My City. It looks cold in your neighborhood, but beautiful. Thanks for sharing, jj
Thank you Joanna. Oddly enough New Year’s Day was probably the warmest it’s been since mid December. It was in the high 40s/low 50s when I was out taking pictures. Thanks for stopping by. Please come back again.
I love the second shot! so beautiful
Thanks Sonya. I was so disappointed while I was at the actual park. I didn’t think any of the photos would come out because it was so overcast and gloomy but the light actually seemed to have worked.
love the tree reflection picture!
Thank you Carrie. I happened to look down to avoid stepping in the puddle and decided to see what kind of photo I could get. I was pleasantly surprised with the result.
oh I feel the cold in these!
Oddly enough Jen it was actually one of the warmer days we’ve had. Thanks for stopping by. Come back again! I love readers.
